117-138 AD was the only Roman emperor to visit every province of the empire. A series of coins was struck to celebrate this imperial progress. The present coin commemorates Hadrian's visit to the province of Africa (roughly equivalent to the modern nation of Tunisia). Obverse: laureate head of Hadrian right; inscription: HADRIANVS - AVG COS III P P. Reverse: personified Africa reclining left, wearing elephant-skin headdress, scorpion!
In right hand, left arm holding cornucopia; basket of grain at her feet (Africa was a major source for the Roman corn supply); inscription: AFRICA.
